Three years after his death, Temitope Balogun, TB Joshua, the late founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), has been charged with abusing and torturing a number of his followers.
An investigation by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) over a two-year period revealed that five British people had accused TB Joshua of forcing them to have rapes and abortions at a secret Lagos complex over a 20-year period.

The two-year investigative report by Africa Eye on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) included a detailed analysis of the victim testimonies. They claimed to have lived for more than 20 years in a secretive Lagos complex where women were forced to have abortions and were raped.
Additionally, it was alleged that the late televangelist staged his “miracle healings,” which attracted millions of viewers from across the globe.One of the alleged victims, a British woman named Rae, was 21 years old in 2002 when she left Brighton University to join the church. She spent the next twelve years as one of Joshua’s purported “disciples,” living inside his elaborately planned Lagos concrete compound.

She told the BBC, “We all thought we were in heaven, but we were in hell, and in hell terrible things happen.”
According to Rae, Joshua subjected her to sexual abuse and held her in a form of isolation for a period of two years. She claimed that as a result of the severe abuse, she attempted suicide multiple times while she was housed there. The last time many of her friends saw her was when she was a student at Brighton University. She had been studying graphic design while residing in a shared house twenty-five minutes from the shore. A few weeks prior, she and Rae had traveled to Nigeria in search of a mysterious man who appeared to have the ability to heal people with his hands. He was a Christian pastor with a black beard and white robes. His name was Joshua TB. Those who followed him called him “The Prophet”.

Rae’s congregation, the Synagogue congregation of All Nations [Scoan], was the only place he had time to spend one week with Carla. Rae, though, didn’t go back home. Joshua designed the 12-story compound next to it, where he lived with many of his disciples. Some say they were forced to have an abortion after finding out they were pregnant.When Rae talks about her time in Lagos, her lips twitch. Her speech is halting. There are moments when she might noticeably lose the color in her face. She spent a decade and a half inside Joshua’s compound.
More than fifteen BBC journalists from three continents have taken part in the investigation in the last two years. It was carried out in collaboration with the international media platform openDemocracy. They collected hundreds of hours of interviews, documents, and old video recordings to bolster Rae’s story and uncover more terrifying tales. About 25 eyewitnesses and claimed victims from the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, US, South Africa, and Germany have detailed their experiences inside Joshua’s complex, with the most recent accounts dating from 2019.
